At Hispano Americano Hospital we perform two procedures:
- Cardiac catheterization (left and right)
- Open heart surgery
Cardiac catheterization is the method used by doctors to perform many of the tests and procedures to diagnose and treat coronary artery disease. Cardiac catheterization is performed in conjunction with other studies, such as angiography and electrophysiological studies.
This procedure consists of introducing a long, thin tube (called a "catheter") through an artery or vein in the leg or arm all the way to the heart. Depending on the type of test that your doctor indicates, different procedures may be done during a cardiac catheterization. For example, you could inject a colorant through the catheter to see the heart and its arteries (a study called "angiography"), or you can send electrical impulses through the catheter to study the irregularities of the heartbeat (called 'electrophysiological studies »).
Open heart surgery is an intervention in which the patient's chest is opened and surgery is performed on the heart. The term "open" refers to the chest, not the heart itself. It can be opened or not, depending on the particular type of surgery.
